The 5.11 Tactical RUSH 100 backpack made its initial debut at SHOT Show 2020 and immediately captured widespread attention. Right off the bat, it is noticeably lighter than it looks—especially for a heavy-duty tactical backpack. Boasting a massive 60-liter capacity, it stands as the largest backpack offered by 5.11 Tactical to date.
While its overall design diverges significantly from traditional layouts seen in earlier RUSH models, it still retains key signature elements that fans of the series know and love.

Having been a long-time, highly satisfied user of both the iconic RUSH 24 (which remains fully functional despite years of heavy wear) and the RUSH 72, I can attest to the series' reliability. Everyone I have ever recommended these packs to shares the exact same opinion and continues using them years later.
When I acquired the 60L RUSH 100, it immediately replaced my RUSH 72 as my go-to companion for high-altitude mountain expeditions and multi-day treks.

Exterior & Pocket Design Breakdown
The RUSH 100 features a traditional trekking backpack silhouette coupled with a heavy-duty load-carrying suspension system. Inside, the organization is divided into four key compartments:
1. Main Compartment & Hydration System
Access to the main compartment is provided via a 2/3-length U-shaped zipper, allowing fast access to gear without completely unbuckling the load-stabilizing straps.
Inside, you will find:
- A dedicated hydration reservoir compartment with a vertical stabilizing strap and a top-center hose exit port behind the neck.
- A custom aluminum and fiberglass frame housing, engineered to contour directly to your back for maximum stability.
- Ample space for packing cubes, such as the 5.11 Convoy Packing Cube Mike.
2. Bottom Compartment
Taking up roughly one-third of the lower pack volume, the bottom compartment shares flexible internal space with the main compartment. Packing more items in the top reduces bottom volume, and vice versa. It serves as an ideal space for rain jackets, windbreakers, or a dedicated backpack rain cover.
3. Front Admin Pocket
The front compartment features a wide, U-shaped opening designed for quick access to essential field tools. It features:
- A 3-tier organizational organizer.
- A narrow, zippered mesh pocket at the bottom for small items.
- A flat zippered section suitable for extra utility pouches.
4. Top Quick-Access & Eyewear Pocket
Because the RUSH 100 omits a traditional removable top lid, designers added a spacious top-zippered pouch for immediate necessities (headlamps, extra batteries, compass, gloves, keys) alongside a soft fleece-lined eyewear pocket.
5. Modular PALS/MOLLE & Side Pouch System
- MOLLE/PALS Webbing: Positioned on the sides of the bottom compartment, front admin panel, shoulder straps, and waist belt.
- Pass-Through Side Panels: Located behind the side pouches, these pass-through channels accommodate long items like axes, hatchets, or trekking poles.
- Removable Side Pouches: Measuring approximately 26 x 10 x 14 cm, each pouch easily fits a 1L Nalgene bottle with a GSI nesting cup. While 5.11 states these pouches can be converted into shoulder bags, doing so requires threading triple-stitched webbing through Duraflex auto-lock buckles, making removal somewhat tedious in the field.
The Carrying System: Ergonomics and Weight Distribution
The standout feature of the RUSH 100 is its load-bearing suspension system. Combined with an adjustable ergonomic waist belt, it redistributes heavy loads directly onto the hips, making heavy gear feel remarkably light.
"No matter how heavy the backpack was loaded, once strapped on, only my legs could tell I was carrying more weight than usual."
Key Carrying Features:
- Dual Waist Belt Sizes: Available in S/M (76–91 cm / 30"–36") and L/XL (89–114 cm / 35"–45"). The L/XL belt features 9 rows of MOLLE webbing and offers exceptional weight distribution over the hips.
- Outward Pull Adjustment: The hip belt tightens by pulling the straps outward away from the body, making tensioning far easier under heavy loads. The belt can also be completely detached for tactical integration with armor or chest rigs.
- Height-Adjustable Shoulder Harness: Uses a thick, padded shoulder assembly lined with high-density spacer mesh for ventilation. The harness slides vertically along a heavy-duty Hook-and-Loop panel for custom torso-length fitting.
- Load Lifters: Features top load-lifter straps with dual-level anchor points to pull the weight close to your center of gravity.
- Reinforced Top Grab Handle: A thick, oversized grab handle sits atop the rear panel, making it easy to hoist a fully loaded pack into vehicles or onto platforms.

Field Test Impressions & Real-World Performance
Over an extensive testing period—culminating in a 3-day mountain trek carrying a 30 kg (66 lbs) load—the RUSH 100 proved its worth across extreme weather, steep ascents, rapid descents, and long-distance marches.

What Works Exceptionally Well:
- Superior Ergonomics: The load-carrying system absorbs heavy weights remarkably well, preventing shoulder fatigue even during prolonged mountain runs or physical drills.
- Rugged Durability: Built with 500D Nylon throughout the body and 1000D Nylon on the high-abrasion bottom panel, offering top-tier resistance against tearing and scrapes on sharp rocks.
- Hardware Reliability: The inclusion of Duraflex® Mojave self-locking buckles prevents straps from slipping under high tension.

Points to Consider:
- Bottom Lash Straps: The bottom attachment straps (2.5 cm wide by 70 cm long) are fixed without quick-release buckles. While sufficient for sleeping pads, securing larger winter sleeping bags may require adding an aftermarket 5.11 RUSH Tier System.
- Fixed Internal Divider: The divider between the lower and main compartments is fixed; while it flexes to share space, it cannot be fully unzipped into one continuous cavity.

Verdict: Is the 5.11 RUSH 100 Worth It?
The 5.11 Tactical RUSH 100 is not just a standard hiking bag—it is a purpose-built heavy-duty tactical deployment pack. If you are looking for a rugged, highly organized, and comfortable 60L backpack that can survive punishing outdoor environments without failing, the RUSH 100 is an exceptional long-term investment.
