รำลึกถึง Extortion 17 เหตุการณ์ที่สหรัฐสูญเสียเจ้าหน้าที่ปฏิบัติการพิเศษมากที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ Valor Tactical

"Four-legged people can make mistakes, and wise men can make mistakes."

Even though it is a Tier 1 special operations unit in the world
Being a valuable human resource resulting from training
and developed heavily, using a huge budget to develop it
People of this rank, who are few in number in the army,
But there are also days when they make mistakes…

This mistake was a big one.
And in exchange for a very high price
Today we will look back at this event once again.

Back on the night of June 5, 2011, Special Operations Team Bravo Company
From the 75th Ranger Regiment, they are conducting an infiltration mission into the area.

To hunt down and capture or kill one of the Taliban leaders, Qari Tahir.
The latest information is that they are in Tangi village
in a town.
Of Afghanistan

This time, it is considered a joint mission under the leadership
of JSOC (Joint Special Operation Center), which has a special operations unit
Participated in many operations, including the 75th Ranger Regiment.
, Afghan special operations forces, including SEAL Team 6 (Devgru)
And the Air Force STS can be called an All Star event.
It's a Tier 1 special operations unit in the United States.

In the first phase, a team of 75th Rangers and Afghan special operations personnel
Some of them went into the village, assessed the battle and sent the information back to the base.
That important targets and main forces are in the area, they are ready to open fire.
If ordered ...

The operation proceeded smoothly according to plan and the command center was set up.
Another task force is preparing to enter the area for support and siege.
The Taliban in the area were not allowed to escape, and they hoped that this operation would
To bring down Taliban leader Qari Tahir and his forces once and for all.
Which later led to the assassination of Osama bin Laden....

The second group preparing to enter the area consisted of the Naval Special Operations Unit.
From Seal Team 6 (Devgru), Gold Squadron, a total of 15 men.
It can be called the elite operation team of Seal Team 6.
Along with two other SEAL officers
from Seal Team 1 (West Coast)

and special officers from the Naval Special Warfare Unit

That's two Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers and one decoder.
One communications officer and one handler, as well as one K-9 dog.

Accompanied by Tier 1 Special Operations Unit personnel
Of the Air Force, that is the 24th Special Tactics Squadron ( STS ).
A total of 3 people, consisting of paratroopers and rescue personnel
Two pararescuemen and one air support controller

Working with seven other Afghan special operations officers.
With one civilian military interpreter to act as a coordinator.

At this point, it seems like a dream team that can do whatever it wants.
And the chances of this mission being successful are incredibly high.
When it comes to decades of combat experience,
Their countless battles have passed..

Because the Night Stalker set was busy with other missions, but still
The team of pilots selected for this mission is considered top-notch.
Of the pilots in the US military, those were Dave Carter and Bryan Nichols.
From the Extortion Company flying unit

Even though they weren't included in the famous Night Stalker team,
But Carter has more than 4,500 hours of flying experience.
and more than 1,000 hours of combat service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Although the aircraft flying was a standard CH-47D Chinook model,
But with that experience and ability, it is already accepted that
They are second to none in the US military.

From internal planning, the unit has discussed the distribution of forces.
Splitting into multiple transport aircraft may create further problems.
Due to terrain limitations, many landing spots are too far apart.
This makes them more at risk of being confronted by the Taliban.

Because the mission required speed and accuracy, they chose to take the risk.
By transporting the entire task force using a single Chinook aircraft.
With Apache aircraft providing all-around protection and AC-130s providing support.
From above again, which will land on the other side of the village at night.
and use the siege method to squeeze the circle until the mission can be completed safely.

This whole plan looks very tight, in typical Devgru style, which is known as Tier 1.
Of a world-class special operations unit, everything seems to be going smoothly.

When the mission arrived on the evening of June 6, they were contacted.
It came from the 75th Ranger Regiment that they had been firing on the Taliban.
Until they began fleeing the area along with Taliban leader Qari Tahir .

By then, the second special operations team had boarded the Chinook.
Dubbed Extortion 17, it took off from the area.
With additional support team flying in another aircraft under call sign
That Extortion 16 will provide assistance from a distance.

At 2:00 am local time, the unexpected happened.
When the Taliban group led by Qari Tahir were fleeing in the jungle
They heard the sound of the plane approaching.. They knew what was going to happen.

They use their expertise in the area to create camouflage in the deep forest.
With this advantage, the AC-130 and Apache aircraft
It is difficult to detect this abnormality.. This is a Taliban trap!

They divided their forces into areas where they thought the aircraft would be parked.
And another point is on the other side of the high mountain, when the time is right.
They started shooting .....

RPGs and AK-47 rounds were fired from part of the forest.
The Apache aircraft took cover and opened fire.
Back to where the Taliban were hiding in the jungle.

But that was just to attract attention, at that moment.
The first RPG rocket was launched from the other side of the two-story building.
In a nearby building just 220 meters away
It immediately rushed towards the Extortion 17 aircraft.

Because the Taliban knew that the plane was a transport plane.
The soldiers entered their area… They didn’t know who was on the plane.
But he knew that if they shot down that plane,
That's their win tonight...

The first one missed the target! Although they lost their balance a bit, they survived.
But just a few seconds later, another RPG rocket came flying towards them.
And that was the moment when the thread of their destiny snapped..

The second RPG rocket hit the plane's rear propeller hard!
Causing the aircraft to catch fire and lose control in less than 5 seconds.
The plane crashed at 2:38 a.m. on June 6, 2011.

"Fallen Angel! I repeat...Fallen Angel" the Apache pilot's radio said.
Those who were present at the incident reported back to the headquarters that at this time
The Extortion 17 aircraft that transports world-class special operations personnel
There was a mistake and it was shot down into enemy territory.

The 75th Ranger Unit and all ground units were informed.
They were all in shock and panic.. They were worried about their friends.
Including when news was received from AC-130 that enemy forces were detected advancing.
To the crash site.... They decided to go through the jungle.
To create a defensive line at the drop point first.

They still have hope that they will meet survivors of the plane crash.
Even though their hopes seem slim…

They decided to reach the drop point as soon as possible, which was some distance away from them.
Up to 7 kilometers, most of the area is mountains and dense forest.

They decided to run and headed down to the main road.
which is highly susceptible to IEDs planted by the Taliban
But they used their survival experience to reach the area.
Within just a little over an hour

When they reached the crash site, he also saw flames from the plane.
The belongings were scattered, and they still had no sign of survivors.

The 75th Ranger team began to set up a defensive line, and shortly after,
They heard a second explosion from the plane.
Causing debris from the plane to collide with the field medical team.
Who are searching for the injured and collecting the bodies of the deceased in the area.

However, the Taliban did not give up. They tried.
Releasing water from dams to cause flash floods
Hitting the officers and the plane crash site
In the hopes of making it more difficult for the two rescue teams to do their jobs.
Including the need to separate the groups of officers before carrying out the attack.

But with their experience and good fortune, they have learned
Due to the previous abnormality, they were able to survive.
No one was injured, at which point the Taliban decided to retreat.

After establishing a defensive line, the 75th Ranger Unit coordinated
To the rescue team, set up a safe helicopter landing point at a distance.
7 kilometers from the crash site and the rescue team has entered the area.

To clean up and destroy classified information and equipment.
and search for the bodies of the deceased, including trying to find the injured.
You can watch the actual video recorded from the plane crash site.
You can find it in the clip below.

But all hope was lost when they discovered the bodies of the deceased.
All 38 figures were obtained, and the search was complete.

And it is considered a confirmation that this is an incident of the loss of a special operations officer.
The most in a single day and the greatest loss in history.
US Army Special Operations Command replaces Operation Red Wing
Or as we know it in the Lone Survivors incident.

The dead included 31 US personnel (including military dogs).
and seven Afghan special operations officers and interpreters

Their resting bodies were welcomed back to their homeland as heroes.
President Barack Obama left the White House after receiving the news.
Came to the Delaware airport to personally welcome and pay respects to the deceased.
Without any news recording because it is an internal affair.

Even though Qari Tahir and the Taliban have declared victory,
and come out to take responsibility
for this operation.
But his fate was not long-lasting.
A week after this incident, the US launched a carpet bombing of the entire village.
This resulted in the death of Qari Tahir and the entire Taliban group.

And after this incident, there was a change in format.
Including many more battle tactics, which this event
It has been adapted from textbooks and has become one of the most important training topics.
For the 24th Special Tactics Squadron ( STS )
To practice how to cope with similar incidents that may occur in the future.

What is really unfortunate about this incident is that all the members
DEVGRU member who was in Gold Squadron and died in the incident.

They were originally going to be put in a special operations unit that would go in.
Kill Osama bin Laden in the next few months and that's why.
That made the change and chose to use Red Squadron.
To carry out such missions instead, with the remaining members
The Gold Squadron unit joins as an additional special operations unit.

And this is the story of 17 Extortion incidents in the United States.
