ครบรอบ 166 ปี เปิดประวัติ ตำรวจไทยตั้งแต่ อดีต ถึง ปัจจุบัน

October 17 is a significant date for law enforcement in Thailand. On this day, Thailand celebrates Thai National Police Day (วันตำรวจไทย). Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 17, 2026, as the Royal Thai Police reaches its 166th anniversary.

While the primary mission of police officers is to serve and protect citizens, the history of Thai law enforcement runs much deeper. Explore the origins of the Royal Thai Police, how the official date changed to October 17, and how premium police gear elevates mission readiness.

The History of Thai Police: From Ancient Roots to Modern Era

The organization known today as the Royal Thai Police has undergone centuries of evolution:

  • Sukhothai Era: Internal peace and order were managed by a unit called Kong Trawen (กองตระเวน), which patrolled the capital.
  • Ayutthaya Era (King Borommatrailokanat): Government administration was structured into the Jatusadom (Four Pillars: Wiang, Wang, Khang, and Na). This marked the first official appointment of police officers in Thai history.
  • Rattanakosin Era (King Rama IV): In 1860, King Chulalongkorn/King Mongkut initiated administrative reforms to align Thailand's public infrastructure with European standards, leading to the formation of the Police Corps (กองโปลิศ).
  • 1915 (King Rama VI): On October 13, 1915, King Rama VI consolidated all police forces into a single body known as the Police Department (กรมตำรวจ). Consequently, October 13 was designated as Thai Police Day for decades.

Why Was Thai Police Day Moved to October 17?

In 2017, former Royal Thai Police Commissioner Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda officially changed National Police Day from October 13 to October 17.

This shift was made out of respect for King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX), who passed away on October 13, 2016. October 17 now serves as the official day to commemorate the founding of the Royal Thai Police and honor law enforcement personnel nationwide.

Key Commemorative Ceremonies on Police Day

Every year on October 17, the Royal Thai Police hosts nationwide events to pay tribute to fallen officers and highlight dedication to public service:

  1. Oath-Taking and Parade Ceremony: Demonstrates discipline, readiness, and commitment to serving the nation.
  2. Award Presentation: Honors outstanding officers in crime suppression, community service, and organizational development.
  3. Wreath-Laying Ceremony: Pays respect to brave officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
  4. Public Welfare Activities: Includes blood donations and charitable drives to give back to local communities
